WHO IS JAMES DICKINSON?
My talent for re-envisaging business models and with a head for strategy saw me being picked up and promoted to a product manager within Gen-i, heading a $90M portfolio of managed security, cloud and network products. I increased profitability of the portfolio through launching some new services and building a multi dimensional cost model, the first of its kind in Gen-i.
Having worked behind the scenes for a while I longed to be back on the front line and took a role right up my alley - ESS or Enterprise Solution Specialist as Gen-i became Spark. This role allowed me to work directly with large clients to shape and align both their business and IT strategies.
After writing so much strategy and handing it across the desk I really needed to implement and own the outcome as the next phase in my career. I landed the role of Regional Head of IT for OCS, a large international out-sourcing company headquartered in the UK for whom i'd written strategy in the past. My initial scope of the New Zealand operation quickly grew to encompass Australia and China also, totaling 8,000 staff. Here we undertook a momentous transformation from an aging legacy on-premise infrastructure centered around to modern cloud hosted, scalable infrastructure. This also consolidated the entire regions' IT into the fit-for-purpose cloud environment via a triple domain migration and infrastructure consolidation. The most notable part of this transformation is that the technical aspect happened in nine short weeks with no client or end user impact, such is the power of cloud. After spending a couple of years working around Asia Pacific and the UK I was in need of some local focus.
My next challenge was to lead the cyber security and infrastructure consolidation efforts for BDO, a large professional services firm. Though a large international brand I was looking after the New Zealand business, comprised of eleven independent legal entities. With trust being at the core of the relationship between the client and their accountant it was paramount to ensure that we were at the top of our game when it came to cyber security. Additionally with over a dozen data centers and corresponding application duplication from multiple mergers it was imperative that this be centralised and standardised. This work culminated in being nominated for and winning a spot in the 2018 CIO top 100 awards, a very humbling experience.
